Responsible Gambling

Gambling involves financial risk. Casino games generally offer negative-expectation entertainment: over repeated play, the mathematical advantage usually belongs to the operator, even though individual sessions can produce wins.

Protect essential money

Set financial limits before play and use only money you can afford to lose. Keep rent, food, bills, savings commitments and debt repayments outside a gambling budget. Never gamble with borrowed money. A limit is a maximum, not a target you need to spend.

Do not chase losses

A previous loss does not make a future win due. Increasing stakes or depositing again to recover money can deepen financial harm. Stop when you reach a limit, and do not rely on a casino payout to meet an urgent expense. Gambling is not a dependable source of income.

Use barriers and take breaks

Operator tools may include deposit limits, time reminders, time-outs and self-exclusion. Read what each tool measures and which accounts it covers. Bank gambling blocks and device blocking software can add barriers, although coverage varies. Do not bypass a restriction by switching accounts or payment methods.

Self-exclusion asks participating businesses to block gambling access for a defined period. It is a practical step toward stopping, not a reason to search for an operator outside the scheme. Our guide to gambling controls explains the differences between common tools.

Find support where you live

In the UK, GamCare provides gambling-harm support information for people affected by their own or someone else’s gambling. Check its current service options and eligibility directly.

Outside the UK, consult your local health service, gambling regulator or recognised gambling-harm organisation for support appropriate to your jurisdiction. You do not need to reach a particular loss amount to ask for help. A trusted person can help you take the first step. If there is an immediate risk to anyone’s safety, contact local emergency services.

Signs to act on

Borrowing to gamble, concealing spending, repeatedly breaking limits or struggling to stop are reasons to pause gambling and seek professional support. This publication provides educational information and cannot provide personal treatment, crisis assistance or account-level self-exclusion.
